April 2-19, 2026 – “The Library Within”
National Museum of Literature
8 Nicolae Crețulescu Street, Bucharest, Romania
The National Museum of Literature invites you to the painting exhibition “Library Within”, signed by the artist Paula Craioveanu. The opening will take place on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 6:00 PM. The event will be held at the museum headquarters on 8 Nicolae Crețulescu Street, Bucharest.
What is our relationship with books today? “Library Within” is a space of introspection, a place where past and present meet, where our relationship with books and historical memory becomes visible and tangible. The figures that traverse this series are not ordinary portraits or decorative interiors, but mental spaces—places that gather knowledge and experience. References to ancient sculpture, to classical historical forms, and to universal typologies blend with objects of the present. The past is not only admired but internalized, transformed, and transposed into the intimate structure of each individual.
“Library Within” can be understood as a conceptual space in which the accumulation of knowledge is reconfigured as a transformative experience, and identity appears as the result of a continuous inner reorganization.
Not everything we read remains on paper. Some things are transformed within us. What remains from everything we have read, from what has shaped us, from history, from antiquity? What we read and inherit from history shapes our identity, changes our perspectives, and makes us realize that the true library does not exist only in halls or on shelves, but within ourselves.
“Library Within” invites us to step into this universe and discover our own relationship with knowledge, with the past, and with everything that remains from all the books we have ever carried within us.
Books are a central element in my works in this series. I use them as symbols of internalized knowledge, memory, and intellectual heritage. The book runs through the series as a central symbol of knowledge and inner life. Beyond the object, it functions as a carrier of memory, accumulation, and cultural inheritance. Books enter a process of visual and symbolic fusion with the characters. Placed like a crown or carried as a burden, books simultaneously suggest power and responsibility, where intellect meets humanity. Women are represented metaphorically, balancing personal aspirations, social demands, and grace.
Interiors become spaces of reflection, while recurring motifs—the chair, the book, the enclosed frame— construct a coherent visual vocabulary centered on introspection and knowledge.
Books appear throughout the series as recurring symbols of knowledge and inner life. The digital medium, VR (virtual reality) glasses, suggest a contemporary consciousness that is visually oversaturated and in need of a “screen” to process reality. In the context of the “library,” this can be read as a mediation of knowledge: we no longer read the world directly, but through layers, technologies, and systems of interpretation. How do we access interiority in a mediated world?

Unele lucruri se transforma in noi.
